Not summer — with its guaranteed heat but also its crowds, its full-price everything, and its competition for restaurant tables and sunbeds. Spring. The season when the coast wakes up, the light is extraordinary, and the whole experience of being here feels fresh and unhurried and genuinely special.

El Oceano opens its doors for the new season on 31st March each year, and from that first Easter Weekend onwards, everything is available — the hotel, the award-winning restaurant, the Polynesian Pool, the VIP sunbeds, the live entertainment. The season begins fully formed, not in a tentative, half-open way, but with the full El Oceano experience from day one.

Easter at El Oceano

Easter Weekend marks the official start of the El Oceano season, and it's celebrated with real enthusiasm. The restaurant is at its atmospheric best over the Easter period — live entertainment, the Sunday Experience in full swing, and a kitchen that has had the winter to rest, refine, and prepare for another year of exceptional dining. Easter breaks at El Oceano sell out quickly, particularly for those wanting a sea-view room and a restaurant table on the Saturday or Sunday evening. If Easter is on your radar, early booking is strongly advisable.

The wider Mijas Costa comes alive beautifully at Easter too. The Semana Santa processions — Holy Week celebrations observed with great ceremony throughout Andalusia — bring a vivid, deeply atmospheric dimension to the local towns and villages, and La Cala de Mijas, just a five-minute walk along the beach from El Oceano, participates with real community spirit. It's one of those experiences that visitors often describe as unexpectedly moving, and one of the reasons a spring visit to this part of Spain feels like considerably more than just a beach holiday.

Awesome April — the Insider's Month

If Easter marks the opening fanfare of the El Oceano season, April is where the spring really settles into its stride. This is what we call Awesome April — a month that combines warm spring sunshine, a lively but uncrowded atmosphere, the full range of hotel and restaurant facilities, and VIP sunbed rates that represent some of the best value of the entire season.

The Polynesian Pool is open and heated throughout April, with VIP sunbed packages available every day. Weekday sessions — Monday to Thursday — offer a particularly peaceful and indulgent experience, with personal waiter service, swim-up bar access, luxury towels, and the heated pool essentially yours to enjoy at a relaxed pace. From Thursday through Sunday, the entertainment team brings the pool terrace to life with live music and DJ sets, and the atmosphere shifts into something more lively and social. Both versions of the afternoon are excellent. Which you prefer says something about you.

The restaurant in April is operating at full capacity and full quality, with lunch and dinner served daily across the Ocean Room, the Veranda, and — as the month progresses and the evenings warm — the beachfront terrace. Live entertainment runs most evenings. The Sunday Experience is at full pace. And because the peak summer crowds haven't yet arrived, getting exactly the table you want, on exactly the evening you want it, is considerably more achievable than it will be in July or August.

Hotel rates in April reflect the shoulder-season positioning, which means that a stay at El Oceano that would cost considerably more in peak summer is available at a notably more attractive price point without any reduction whatsoever in quality, service, or experience. This is, frankly, one of the best deals in beachfront hospitality on the Costa del Sol, and the guests who have discovered it tend to return to it year after year.

May — When the Coast is at its Most Beautiful

May is the month when even those who've never particularly thought of themselves as spring-holiday people tend to fall in love with the Costa del Sol. The daytime temperatures are reliably in the low-to-mid twenties, the Mediterranean has warmed sufficiently for swimming, the Andalusian countryside is at its lushest and most colourful before the summer heat sets in, and the whole coast has an energy that feels both lively and relaxed — the confidence of a season that is properly underway, without the intensity that July and August bring.

At El Oceano in May, the beachfront terrace begins to feature more prominently in the dining experience. As the evenings lengthen and the temperature after sunset remains genuinely pleasant, al-fresco dining on the terrace — with the Mediterranean in front of you and the stars above — becomes one of the signature experiences of the month. The Full Moon Gala Dinners, held throughout the season, have a particular magic in the spring months when the moon rising over the sea is a sight that never quite loses its power to impress.

The Polynesian Pool continues in full operation through May, and as the air temperature climbs, the pool afternoons become longer and more enjoyable. The combination of a VIP sunbed, a cocktail from the swim-up bar, warm spring sunshine, and the sound of the sea just beyond the terrace is, by any reasonable measure, as good as an afternoon gets.

Getting to El Oceano in Spring

One of the practical advantages of a spring visit to El Oceano is the ease of getting here. Málaga Airport is just 30 minutes by road, and spring flights from the UK, Ireland, and across northern Europe are typically both more available and more competitively priced than their summer equivalents. The drive from the airport along the coastal motorway, with the Mediterranean appearing as you round the bends of the hills above Fuengirola, is itself one of those arrivals that announces very clearly that you're somewhere worth being.

The hotel's location at Km 1026 on the Mijas Costa — directly on the beach, perfectly positioned between Marbella and La Cala de Mijas — gives you excellent access to everything the coast has to offer during your stay. La Cala de Mijas is a five-minute walk along the Senda Litoral coastal boardwalk. Marbella, with its Old Town, the Golden Mile, and Puerto Banús, is fifteen minutes by car. Fuengirola, Málaga city, the Mijas mountain villages — all of it is within comfortable reach for day trips, while El Oceano itself provides more than enough reason to stay put.
