A Village That Kept Its Character

The town has a genuine community to it — a mix of local Spanish families and a long-established international population that has made La Cala its home. Stroll the central boulevard and you'll find traditional Spanish tapas bars sitting cheerfully alongside British cafés serving all-day breakfasts, Italian restaurants, and everything in between. The place is cosmopolitan without being anonymous, busy without being overwhelming.
There is a very popular street market every Wednesday and Saturday, from around 9am to 2:30pm, where stalls offer everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to local crafts, clothes, ceramics, flowers, and much more. Andalucia If you're staying at El Oceano mid-week or over the weekend, the market is well worth an early-morning wander — it's lively, colourful, and one of those experiences that feels genuinely local rather than staged for tourists.
The beach itself — Playa de La Cala — is a lovely stretch of golden sand that curves gently along the bay, sheltered and well-maintained, with a promenade lined with chiringuitos and restaurants where you can sit in the shade and watch the sea. Families, couples, locals, visitors — everyone seems equally at home here, and that easy, inclusive atmosphere is one of La Cala's most appealing qualities.
The Boardwalk — The Senda Litoral
If you do one thing during your stay at El Oceano (beyond the obvious pleasures of our own restaurant, pool and terrace, naturally), make it this: walk the Boardwalk.
The Boardwalk in La Cala de Mijas stretches approximately 6 kilometres along the stunning coastline, forming part of the wider Senda Litoral de Málaga — the Málaga Coastal Path — an ambitious project that, when completed, will run the entire length of the Costa del Sol from Nerja to Manilva. Ionos The La Cala section heads eastward from the village, passing through the Calahonda area and following the water's edge the whole way.
It is, in a word, beautiful. The wooden boardwalk winds along the coast at just above beach level, giving walkers uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean and the long arc of the coastline stretching away in both directions. The path passes rocky headlands, sandy coves, and the occasional watchtower — relics of the Moorish defensive network that once guarded this stretch of coast against pirate raids. The boardwalk is wheelchair friendly, and most beaches along the route have wheelchair access, Ionos making it an inclusive experience for guests of all abilities. The path has seating at regular intervals — benches built into the boardwalk itself — which means you can stop as often as you like, sit with the sea in front of you, and simply breathe.
Walking the full route to the far end of Calahonda and back is a round trip of around 12 kilometres — a proper morning's walk, rewarded at both ends with coffee, cold drinks, or something rather more indulgent from one of the bars along the way. For a shorter, equally spectacular option, simply walk out as far as you please and turn around. There is no wrong version of this walk.
Runners and cyclists use the boardwalk too — the path is perfect for walking, running, or cycling, providing a breathtaking view of the sea and the coastline, Ven a Mijas though do be aware that cyclists are asked to yield to pedestrians at busy times.
The Senda Litoral is one of those experiences that guests are surprised by — they set off for a gentle stroll and come back quietly amazed at what they've found. If you ask the El Oceano team for a recommendation, this will always be near the top of the list.
Evenings in La Cala
La Cala de Mijas has a wonderful selection of restaurants for evenings when you feel like exploring a little further afield — though with El Oceano's award-winning restaurant right here, the competition is stiff.
The seafront and the central boulevard are where most of the action is concentrated, and the choice is genuinely impressive for a town of this size: fresh seafood, traditional Andalusian cuisine, Italian, Indian, and the kind of warm, atmospheric tapas bars that remind you exactly why you came to Spain in the first place.
On Saturday evenings during the hot summer months of July and August, the promenade comes alive with classical music and flamenco dancing. With the outline of the old 16th-century watchtower of Torre Vieja as a backdrop and the moon reflecting on the sea, La Cala celebrates its season of Noches de Luna y Playa — Nights of Moon and Beach.
