Getting to Marbella

Marbella sits roughly 20–25 minutes along the coast from El Oceano’s location between Marbella town and La Cala de Mijas, in fact, you’re already halfway there simply by staying with us. If you’re driving, the AP-7 toll road or the free A-7 coast road both make for a quick, scenic run, and parking is straightforward in the town’s central car parks.

Taxis are readily available and reasonably priced for the short hop, and it’s also entirely possible to combine your visit with public transport if you’d prefer not to drive. Whichever way you choose, Marbella is genuinely close enough that you don’t need to rush your day to make it worthwhile – nor do you need to leave particularly early.

Start in Marbella’s Old Town

Begin where the town itself began: the Casco Antiguo, or Old Town. This is a maze of narrow, whitewashed streets, wrought-iron balconies spilling over with flowers, and small plazas shaded by orange trees. Plaza de los Naranjos, the main square, is the natural heart of it all and a lovely spot for a coffee before you start exploring. Give yourself an hour or two simply to wander without a fixed plan – this part of Marbella rewards getting pleasantly lost, ducking into small boutiques, art galleries and family-run shops along the way.

History lovers should also seek out the remaining sections of the old Moorish castle walls and the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo, a contemporary Spanish engraving museum housed in a beautifully restored 16th-century building – a nice contrast to the town’s glossier reputation.

Lunch with a View

By early afternoon, head toward the seafront. Marbella’s Paseo Marítimo – its palm-lined promenade – stretches for several kilometres and is dotted with excellent chiringuitos (beach restaurants) serving fresh grilled fish, seafood paellas and classic Andalusian tapas, often with your toes practically in the sand.

Alternatively, the streets just behind the promenade hide some wonderful, more intimate restaurants if you’d prefer shade and a slower pace. Either way, a long, unhurried lunch is very much in keeping with how Marbella likes to do things.

An Afternoon in Puerto Banús

No day trip to Marbella feels complete without at least a couple of hours in Puerto Banús, the town’s famous marina, roughly ten minutes further along the coast. This is where the Costa del Sol’s reputation for glamour truly comes to life: rows of superyachts, designer boutiques, and a lively marina-side promenade perfect for people-watching over a coffee or a glass of chilled local wine. Even if shopping isn’t the goal, it’s worth the visit simply for the spectacle – and for a photograph or two against one of the most photographed backdrops on this coast.

If you’d rather swap boutiques for the beach, Puerto Banús and the stretch of coastline either side of it also offer some of the region’s best beach clubs, several with day-bed and cabana options if you fancy a few hours in the sun before heading back.

Book ahead in peak season. Marbella’s best-known restaurants and beach clubs fill up quickly in July and August, so a quick reservation call or online booking is well worth it.
Wear comfortable shoes. The Old Town’s cobbled streets are beautiful but not especially forgiving in heels.
Go early or go late. If you’d rather avoid the midday heat and crowds in summer, an early start followed by a leisurely late lunch – or a shift toward an early-evening visit for golden-hour views over the marina – both work beautifully.
Combine it with a sunset return. The drive back along the coast road as the sun sets over the Mediterranean is one of the loveliest parts of the day.
